The majority of cows have their calves laying down but it's not uncommon to have them standing up. You can see Isaac is clearing it's mouth to make sure it can breathe after he helped by pulling it out. Usually they come by themselves but it doesn't seem to hurt to pull. If it's a really bad delivery they have to pull really hard or use a calf puller.
