Strolling Through the Garden

After a nice long soaking rain yesterday and earlier today, I took a stroll through the garden. There's nothing I love better in the summer than taking a daily walk to see how things are growing. I was glad to see some apples on a few of the trees. I want to try out a recipe I saw for caramel apple jam this fall. The older I get the more I enjoy gardening and canning. I think I can understand why my grandma's didn't give their gardens up until they were too old to make it outside. Somehow getting close to the dirt makes ones fellowship with God a little sweeter. I'm not sure why! We were discussing garden sayings today. Like the corn should be knee high by the 4th of July. Down south they say it something like waist high by the 4th of July. Anyway, the corn wasn't knee high this year. Arthur also remembered his grandma telling him about pulling thistles. Weed them in May, then they will stay. Weed them in June, that is too soon. Weed them in July, then they will die. I guess I better get busy because I have lots of thistles in our raspberry patch. I did see a few small tomatoes growing. Most people like to let their tomatoes ripen on the vine but here at our house, the first tomatoes never ripen. They get eaten as soon as they start to turn! We all love tomatoes! (I can say that now because Amos got married and lives in his own house!)
Close to the garden we've moved the chickens into a dog kennel. Their really growing and like having more space.
