Today I'd like to share the love story of my other grandparents. Back in the 1930's, my grandma Helen, who was seventeen at the time, and Henry who was 21, were both attending the same church and weekly prayer meetings.
Henry had a bad problem with stuttering and stammering when he spoke. It was so bad that Helen thought, "I'll never marry him!" Meanwhile, Henry was praying about his speech problem and decided to take a three month course to improve his speech. He came back preaching and teaching Sunday School.
It wasn't too long before they really noticed each other and although they didn't date as we know it today, they went to lots of church activities together. They both attended Winnipeg Bible Institute, and then on October 5, 1939, they got married at Lowefarm, Manitoba. It was a small wedding but Helen said it was very special! She paid five dollars for her dress and then two more sisters wore the dress at their weddings. The reception was at her house and was a typical "faspa" type lunch.
Helen remembers the wedding was in German and she didn't understand all of it. They moved straight to Henry's place for their honeymoon. They moved into an old house with his sister until they built a new house the next year. It was a small house but one full of love. Helen said Henry was a real romantic man!
I do remember Grandpa being very romantic. He did so many sweet things for Grandma and bought her flowers and china and things she liked. He treated her like his special angel. Again, I miss these two so much but am so thankful for all the wonderful memories I have of them. Can't wait to get to Heaven and see them again!
