Owl Pellets...

While we enjoy science, we don't often take the time we should to do experiments and that kind of thing. When I saw the dissecting owl pellets in Priscilla's school book I figured this sounded easy and proceeded to buy the pellets. Both Priscilla and Silas really took off on this one.
Owls can't digest the bones or fur of the animals they eat so they roll it all up into a ball, some as big as four inches long, and throw them up! If you take the fur stuff away, you can see the bones and figure out what the barn owl was eating. We figured the four pellets they took apart were moles or mice. Priscilla once had a bone museum so this was right up her alley.
If you ever buy yourself some pellets, skip the kit and just buy the pellets and a chart like this to tell you what the bones are. The kit was neat too if you go that route. By the way, the Apologia Exploring Creation With Zoology book is really good. Even if a person didn't use it as a textbook, it has such interesting information about animals, nice colorful pictures, and would be a great addition to a homeschool library.

Our thermometer said 40 below F. this morning. BRRR!!! I think the high was like 20 below! Sure glad for that wood.
